ST. LOUIS – On this day 49 years ago the final piece of the Gateway Arch was put into place.

Construction on steel and concrete monument started in February 1963 and continued for 32 months. It stands 63 feet, or 63 stories tall.

Though the last piece of the Arch was put into place Oct. 28, 1965, the north leg didn’t open until July 1967. The south leg opened nine months later.
