Herrnstadt to Serve on Key Aerospace Advisory Committee

IAM Chief of Staff Owen Herrnstadt will be the first ever trade union representative appointed to serve on a U.S. Industry Trade Advisory Committee (ITAC). He will be serving on the committee concerned with aerospace equipment and will represent the IAM’s viewpoint as part of U.S. labor’s interests in the aerospace industry. The committee provides advice to the U.S. Commerce Department and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative in developing trade policy. The advisory committee system was established by Congress in 1974 and consists of several committees and citizen advisors to ensure that U.S. trade policy and negotiating objectives adequately reflect U.S. public and private interests.“Herrnstadt’s appointment is not only historic as the first trade union representative on such an important committee, but it will give the IAM and labor a much-needed and strong voice in the aerospace arena where trade policy has such a large impact,” said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger.
